Duffy Assembly

Last week we had a Duffy Assembly. Gavin Hill came to talk to us about the importance of reading. Gavin used to play rugby for the NZ Maori, Canterbury, Taranaki and Wellington. He has also played Rugby League for the Canterbury Bulldogs, NZ Kiwis and the 1995 Warriors.

Gavin talked about the importance of having a dream working hard to achieve it.

Thanks for our books Gavin. We love them.

Boy's Night Out

Last night we had our Boy's Night Out. What a great night! I really enjoyed watching the boys be great hosts to their families. We started off by showing our families a presentation so they understand how we do things in the boys class. After that the boys showed their familes around, explained their fantastic work displayed around the class, showed them how we use the computers, the many programmes we use to support our learning and taught them to make comments on our blogs. I was very impressed. The boys did a great job sharing their life in Room 15 with others.

After that we walked over to Room 14 where the boys were hosts once more. They introduced their families to their "little brother" and them showed them around their class and all the things they have helped their buddies create.

Thank you so much everyone for coming along and seeing what your boys have been up to. I really enjoyed the evening and look forward to seeing you all back again sometime.

Postcard Project

This year we are taking part in the postcard project again. The postcard project is where schools from around the world write postcards to each other. So far this year we have received 2 postcards, one from Hastings and the other one from Bangkok, Thailand. How exciting!

Next term we will be writing one each to lots of different places around the world so hopefully we will receive lots more.

Wordless Text

Last week for our writing we created wordless texts about our Easter weekend.

We watched a movie made from a wordless text on You Tube.

We discussed what made it a great wordless text and what we need to remember when we complete ours. This helped us out a lot. Everyone worked really hard and I think they look fantastic. Here are a few of them.

Statistics

Throughout the term we have been learning all about Statistics. We have learnt how to create and read lots of different types of graphs. We have also learnt how to calculate the mean, mode, median etc. To show what we have learnt we carried out our own investigation. We came up with a question, gathered data, created 3 different graphs (one in excel), wrote 3 sentences about our data and calculated the mean etc. We then presented all of our work. Here are a few people that have finished. Very clever!

Inquiry - Thumb Print

For our inquiry we wrote stories all about ourselves so everyone could get to know us a little better. We shared our names, ages, about our school, our families and what we like doing. We published our stories on lines in the shape of our thumb print. We used ink to create a thumb print. Then we enlarged it on the photocopier till we got it the right size. We used sharpie to write our stories and then dyed them. We think they look great. What do you think?

Interschool Swimming Sports

On Tuesday a small group went to the Splash Center to represent Carlton at the Interschool Swimming Sports. Joel and Zhyon went down from our class. Everyone tried really hard and should be proud of their achievements.

Art Work

Over the past few weeks we have been creating a piece of art work to show where we come from. We started off by crayoning a landscape. We made sure to include and special landmarks. Secondly we drew ourselves using indian ink. We also drew a picture of our house in revelation art. Lastly we glued everything together onto a colourful border. They look fantastic. What do you think?

Springvale Park

A couple of weeks ago we had a fun day out with our buddies from Room 14. We started off having a free swim together in the school pool then we went down to the Springvale Park. We  played games. We had Vortex, frisbees, hacky sacks and sacks for sack races. We also took our lunch down. We had a great time!

Blogging Challenge - Week 3

This week for the Student Blogging Challenge the boys tackled the Challenge with Number 10.

I have just finished washing my clothes and found one sock that is now full of holes. I can't use it as a sock, but list 10 other ways I could use the sock.

I decided to give it a go. Here is what I came up with.

I could:
  • Create a sock pillow for Kingi (class mascot).
  • Turn it into a sock monkey or sock creature by adding buttons for eyes and sewing on ears etc.
  • Make a hacky sack. Fill up the sock with rice and sew up the holes.
  • Use it as a dust rag. Slip the sock on your hand and dust furniture etc
  • Create a leg warmer. Cut the front off it and slip it onto your leg.
  • Use it as a golf club cover.
  • Make a drink cozy. Cut the top off the sock, slide it over a bottle to keep the bottle cool.
  • Use it as a cleaning rag. Wash the car, wash the outside of the windows etc
  • Make a dog toy. Tie a knot in it and play fetch with the dog.
  • Use it as a shoe polisher. Cut the sock into strip and use it to polish/buff your shoes.

Have you got any clever ideas that are different to mine? Add them onto the Padlet (wallwisher) below. Lets see how many we can come up with.

Commenting Guidelines

As you know we are taking part in the student blogging challenge, During the challenge we will be visiting lots of class and students blogs and hopefully lots of people will visit us so I thought I would take the time to remind you about making good comments. Here is a poster we made as a class showing what we think the guidelines should be. Have fun exploring blogs and making lots of comments.

Swimming with Room 14

We were lucky enough to go swimming with Rm 14 again. Here are some of our action shots.

Senior School Swimming Sports

On a hot Tuesday afternoon the Senior School went to W.I.S to have our swimming sports. We needed to find our fastest swimmers to go to interschool swimming.

Before we took our long and hot walk to WIS we got organised. We ate our lunch. We munched and crunched our food down. When we were finished eating our snacks, we got changed in the class, we shut the curtains so we could get dressed. We got changed as fast as the speed of a shooting star because Room 7 was coming to use our computers. After we got dressed we were allowed to have a 10-15 minutes of play time before we left.

When the Senior School finished getting organised we lined up, we had to go on the long and tiring walk to WIS. Some parents even came with us. They had to hurry us up because we were walking so slow.. I think everyone in our class was sensible and behaved. All you could hear on the way was kids talking, if you wanted some piece of quiet you were in the wrong place.

Once our foot touched the W.I.S grounds we all sat down into our age groups, then Mrs Larsen came around and gave sun block out to some people. Mr Waite welcomed us to the swimming sports and explained how the day was going to go. He told us who the lifeguard was, Mr Sager and if you get a coloured stick after that race that means you came 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
We were doing the length’s races first before the widths races. The people doing length races got prepared to get in the freezing, cold pool.

The first event I was in was a length freestyle. When Mr Watie called my name out I jumped up and down like I was Hong Kong and ran to Ms Bennett. We lined up at the end of the pool ready to take off. Ms Bennett banged the blocks together, it was like a bomb, then we were off. I dived in. The water felt as cold as frozen ice. I swam as fast as I could. I was nearly at the finish then I slowed down. I couldn't hold on anymore. I came second. I was proud I came second. At least I tried my hardest.

My second event was backstroke. That was hard. I almost came 3rd but one of the other racers got in my way so I didn't end up getting a placing. I almost hit my head on the concrete wall at the end too. Luckily there were people their to protect our heads. During my race my mum was cheering me on. That made me feel good and try even harder.

My final race was breaststroke length. I won before we even started because no one in my age group for boys was in breaststroke length, it was stink because I had no competition. That meant I had to face the 10 year old girls. I still won!

After we had finished all the events we got changed into our clothes. We had to wait a long time for some people to get ready. Finally when everyone was ready we were off again. We had to make that long walk again, all the way back to Carlton School. Everyone was really tired. We were all extremely happy when we arrived back at the school.

Even though it was a long, hot, exhausting day I had fun because I love swimming.
