Duffy Books

Yesterday Carlton School had a Duffy Assembly. Our Duffy visitor was Linda Vagana shes a ex silver fern. She also played for her home country Samoa. After she retired she became a coach for the Samoan under 21. She also coached the Samoan team at the commonwealth games. Now she is the manager of the Duffy Books in homes. She said that books saved her life. She used to get teased because she was so tall. Kids use to call her Goliath and tall feller. She didn't like it. She started to fail at school at her report said she got a D at every thing. Her dad was a teacher so she couldn't say that D meant 'Did really well'. Her dad made her study. So when she got teased she would turn around and say something like hey whatever girl and started using lots of different words. All the mean girls use to say what did she say. Eventually they started leaving her alone. She also told us this funny story. it goes like this. One day there was a boy and there was a girl. The boy said to the girl woohoo. Then the boy saw the girl walking to school and said woohoo then the girl turned around and the boy saw the girl was actually a boy. After the funny story we got our books. Guess what Room 15 were first. How lucky! TeWaoriki and Caleb went up to Linda and got the books. Caleb shook her hand and said I'm not gonna wash my hand again. I bet he does!

Interschool Swimming Sports

On Wednesday the 30th of March people from Carlton school went to the Splash for the Wanganui Interschool Swimming Sports. Grace did really well. We had to wait patiently for our event. It took a very long time for our races but it was worth it. Tarron done well he got into the finals for the 9 year old backstroke. When it came to William's race he came fourth and got into the finals. For the medley relay Carlton did well. After all the races we got a 30 minute free swim.

Iceblocks

Today we were each given a yummy iceblock because we had such a good time at the Marae. Lucky us!

Hand Monsters

After lots of experimenting with pencil we used the techniques we were taught to create a hand monster. Our hand monsters are finally finished and on display. They took us a while. But it was worth it.

Hello World!

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would write a post letting you know that I am on the mend. I will not be back a school for a while yet, but I will be able to communicate with you through the blog.

I hope all of you are doing well and you are trying your best. Remember we want to show everyone how great we are. Boys while I'm not there you need to step up, make good choices and be the role models I know you are. Make me proud boys!

I want to know everything you are getting up to, so if you are given a change ask Mrs McAvoy if you are allowed on the blog and fill me in. I started to write a post about swimming sports then realised I couldn't say much as I wasn't there. Maybe someone would like to go to edit posts and write something. I miss you all and I look forward to hearing from you.

Swimming sports

On Thursday the senior school walked to Wanganui Intermediate to do swimming sports. It was very long and tiring walking there. When we got there we had to get changed in to our togs and line up to get our house letter written on our hand. We had to wait patiently till our events were called. The pool was pretty shallow and cold. After our races we lined up to come back to school. It was getting close to 3pm and we were running out of time, so Ms O'Connor made us run back to school.

Buddy Art

Today we went to Room 12 for our 1st Buddy Art Session. We were each given a buddy, Room 15 people had to double up because we have a lot more students than Room 12. After we were all sorted we taught our buddies how to draw a continuous line drawing of their face. They were really good. Maybe even better than some of our own.

No Marae Visit This Week

On Wednesday we were supposed to be going to the Putiki Marae. But Mrs Larsen told us today we couldn't because the weather is supposed to be bad. We were disappointed that we couldn't go. We are now going next Wednesday or Friday, whichever day is better weather wise.

Swimming Sports Practice

Today Room15 went to the pool and we did swimming sports practice. We all had to pick what you would like to do related to swimming. I choose flutter board, back flutter board and freestyle. I am excited because we are going to Wanganui Intermediate.

Our Inquiry

First Mrs Larsen wanted to know our first thoughts, all about a successful person. Mrs Larsen got all of our ideas and collated them on a big piece of paper.
Next we came up with questions we need to know about ourselves for us to become successful.
We are now working through answering those questions. We have been looking at the brain.
In week 6 Room 15 started a wonderings wall. If we want to know more about our inquiry and the brain, we can put it onto the wall.

Basic Facts Wall

2 weeks ago Mrs Larsen put on the wall the results of our basic facts test. It has everybodies names and the score you got. The best person in the class is Zane. Every Friday when we had finished our basic facts the teacher will put up on the wall the new results. The children will get to see their progress.

Inquiry

Today we starting to look at the brain. We looked closely at what they brain can do. We will now be exploring the cerebrum more closely and see if we can answer our question, how do we learn?

Simply The Best

The person I have chosen for striving for accracy and precision is someone who has really tried hard to ensure all of their work is completed on time. This was an area they needed to work on. So far this year they have made some fantastic positive changes with this and is doing really well.

King Of The Den

King Of The Den goes to someone who is really trying hard. they always get their work completed to a good standard. They have made some great progress already this year. Click below to see who is it.

Kingi is now ready for learning!

Yesterday Isaiah took Kingi home. They had lots of fun and Kingi came back to school the next day definitely ready for learning. He now has his very own desk, computer, maths book, pencil etc. Isaiah helped him to ensure he had all the things he needed. Thanks Isaiah. Player of the Day

Congratulations Bayley. He received 2 player of the day ecrtifiactes this week! One for Volleyball and one for Splashball. Way to go Bayley!

Duffy Books

This week 2 lucky people received Duffy Books. Well done Zane and TeWaoriki. You deserve it.

Kapa Haka

Today during Kapa Haka we talked a lot more about our trip to the Marae that is coming up. We were taught a new song ready for us to sing next week. We were also taught how to hongi correctly. Check out how some of the boys did.

Paper Recycling

Yesterday I did paper recycling. Tarron is the paper recycling cheif. I also sometimes get to use the keys. We have individual bins to put the paper recycling in. It is probably my favourite job ever.

Kapa Haka

Last Thursday we had Kapa Haka. We have a new Kapa Haka teacher Matua Ashley. He is a man. He will be teaching us a haka about carlton school and more waiata.

Player of the Day

Well done DJ. He played cricket really well on Friday and received the player of the day certficate.

Merit Certificates

Congratulations William, TeWaoriki and Kahu for all receiving merit certificates for consistently completing their homework.

School Spirit Day

On Friday we had a spirit day to help raise money for the people effected by the Christchurch Earthquake. We had to wear read and black. Check out how we did!

This week the person chosen for Striving for Accuracy and Precision is Zane. He has made some great progress with his basic facts. Every week he has made an improvement and is now achieveing 98/100. Way to go Zane!

King Of The Den

Christchurch Earthquake Remembrance

Today at 12.51pm the whole school and lots of people from our community came together, on our school Field, to show our respect for the people who have died in the Christchurch Earthquake.

BP Technology Challenge

Our BP Technology Challenge this week was to build a shelter that could keep 2 people dry if they were stranded in the bush. Unfortunately every group had a bit of a disaster, mainly because they didn't use their time wisely and work as a team. Remember boys, you must all work together and stay focused. Success-O-Meter and Wall of Fame

In Room 15 we have a succes-o-meter. We use it to keep track of how people are going in our class. We have three levels: Cubs, Lions and Kings. I am currently on lions. We also have a Wall of fame. Zane and Te Waoriki are on it now. I am now trying to work on becoming a King Of The Den. I can't wait for it to be me.

Zero Waste

Today we started a programme called Zero Waste. For the next 4 days Mr Gurton is coming in to teach us all about recycling.

This week Kahu has been Striving for Accuracy and Precision in all area. It was hard to choose 1 piece of work because he has been trying hard with everything! Keep it up Kahu!

King Of The Den

Meeting Studio Two

Today we went out to Fordell School to see Mrs Fraser(Ms Wyatt) and meet our buddy class Studio Two. When we arrived we had a quick introduction then we were off to the pool. We just loved the pool (even though it was much colder than ours) and the diving board. Even Kingi had a go!


After that we headed back to school and had lunch. During lunch we met the principal and Studio Two taught us a new game, pig hunting. It was great! After lunch we had a tour around the school. We checked out their library, wheer their chicken coop is going to go and where their hall is going to be. We can't believe how small their school is. It's smaller than two of our senior classes! Lastly we played some game together. Midnight and seaweed. We had a blast out their. We can't wait to get together with them again and show them around our school.

Class Weekly Reflection

What: On Wednesday we did our BP Technology Challenge. It was a lot of fun. We had to make a marble track. The one that made the best track with at least one curve was the winner. Tarron's groups won. On Thursday we had our first Kapa Haka lesson. We have a new teacher Matua Ashley. On Friday after morning tea Room 15 went and visited Mrs Fraser and Studio Two at Fordell School. We played lots of games and went for a swim in their pool. All of us loved the diving board. We have played tackle seaweed and went to Room 3 to do their spelling testing.

So What: When we were at Fordell School some of us learnt how to play a game called pig hunter. Some of us learnt how to change the background on our blogs. We learnt some new waiata in Kapa Haka. We learnt about blends for spelling. Some of us learnt a new game called multi sports.

Now What: Our class goal is to work quietly so we can get our work done, that way we will get more fun time. We want to do more BP Technology Challenges, more IT, more P.E, more hut building and learn more art. We also want the teachers to join in the games.

BP Technology Challenge

Today our BP Technology Challenge was to make a marble track. The boys could use anything in the classroom. The one requirement was, the track must have a curve. Congratulations Zane, Isaiah, Caleb and Tarron for building the winning track.

Swimming

In Week Two Room 15 started swimming we first had some races to sort out which groups we were in. Mrs Larsen had two groups, Mrs Macvoy had one and Mr Burgess also had a group.
We sometimes get to play games. I like swimming.

Fun Time

Today for fun time we made huts using our classroom furniture and sheets. It was so much fun! It was great to see the boys being creative and playing nicely together. We even had a hut with its own air conditioning(a fan). I can't wait to see their designs next time.

TIME CAPSULE

First we had to do a me sheet, we had to add lots of detail to it. Next we got a ball of string and a buddy. They put the string from your head to toes to measure our height. We also got a piece of paper and we had to write something about what you will want to improve on this year. The very last thing to do was to dig a hole, we put the time capsule in the hole and covered it back up.

ME SHEET DISPLAY

At the very start of school we made a sheet all about us to let people know all about us. It took us at least 1 week but all the people who could work fast did it a lot quicker.

Class Photo In A Tree

On Friday we had a class photo for our blog. The Photo was taken down the bank in a tree. It was hard to find a good tree. When we got up the tree it was hard to find a good spot in the tree. Eventually we did and we got the photo taken. By Tarron

The Flag

On the first day off school we were given two job for Carlton school. One off them was the flag and the other one was recycling. Three people have to do recycling and one person has to do the flag. Every morning when we get to school we have to do put it up and every afternoon we have to put it down.

New Teacher Aid

3 weeks ago we got a new Teacher Aid in our class his name is Mr Burgess. He is a good teacher. He takes supervised games. Supervised games are when a teacher gives up their lunchtime to play a game with people that want to play a game. He also helps DJ with his work. We call him Scott and he is from Scotland.

Time Out

In Room 15 we have a time out spot. The time out spot is a circle out the front and one out the back. It's for if you don't follow the classes positive choices or if you need to cool down. There are some people that have been out there from week one. When you come in you have to say sorry.

Lion's

On the second day of school Room 15 did some art. Mrs Larsen gave us a sheet which had a lion on it. She told us to colour it in. When we were finished we had to give itto Mrs Larsen and she would put them on our window. Ms Macovy made the trees and she made the grass for our lions. We turned our window into a jungle. When we had finished we had to get a sheet that had a little lion head on it. Then we went to go out side and Mrs Larsen took a photo of us. She is going put the photos on the loin heads that we made.
