This weeks Story

This week at school we did writing with Ms McAvoy and then we played a game with Mr Sager. I like this week because we got to do heaps of fun things like playing line tag with the class and doing Kapa Haka practice with the school. This week when we did our listening test it was pretty tricky but the best story and the funniest story was called beans because the nextdoor-neighbour said "Your boy is full of beans, that boy is full of beans".

Week 3 Reflection

WHAT: This week was fun because we got to go swimming in the school pool, we did relays with Mr Sager both of our teams had a draw. I had a fun week because we got to put our time capsule letters in a bucket then we put it in the hole that we dug up.This week we did a listening test.

SO WHAT: This week I learnt about HANDS ON LEARNING that we always have to focus on our learning and also focus on the teacher.

NOW WHAT: My learning goal for next week is to get my work finished in time.

Window Display

Mrs Larsen has been busy turning our window into a jungle. What do you think?

Our Waka

After creating our class rules and warm fuzzy's we started to make our waka. Our waka represents us on our learning journey. We are all on a journey together. To keep moving in the right direction we need to work together and display qualities that make our class a great place to be. Everyone in our class coloured in a person and wrote on a paddle a quality we need to display. I hope we keep paddling in the right direction all year!

Our Warm Fuzzy's

At the start of the term we discussed some class rules. We came up with some great ideas. To show that we agree to the class rules we created a warm fuzzy. We are going to try and be warm fuzzy's by following the rules. Here is the display we made with our rules and warm fuzzy's.

Name Monsters

We have been busy creating name monsters. We needed to fold our piece of paper in half and then link our name, we then put it up against the window to trace it to create a mirror image. Next we coloured in the inside of our name with bright colours. We went over the outline of our name with a black crayon. Lastly we dyed our artwork a nice bright colour. Mrs Larsen has put them up in our clock bay. It brightens it up a lot. I think they look great! What do you think?

Swimming with Our Buddies

On Thursday we invited our buddies to have a swim with us. We really enjoyed splashing around having fun with them. We spend a whole hour in the pool! It was great fun.

Observational Drawing with Room 14

On Tuesday Room 14 came to do art with us. Our focus was continuous line drawing. We each got an art pencil, a mirror and found our buddy. We got our books and started drawing our eyes. Mrs Larsen showed us how to draw them the correct shape. After that we tried drawing our mouth. Lastly Mrs Larsen showed us where to draw all of the features on our face. We had a go at drawing our whole face. Watch the space to see how they turn out once we add some colour.

Meeting our Buddy Class

On the very first day of school we got up to something already, we went to Room 14 and helped them make fish hand-prints. We painted their hand the colour they chose and made either a fish or an octopus. For an octopus they placed their hand twice, palm in the same place but fingers in a different place. For a fish they put their hand down once with the thumb sticking out. After we finished painting we read some books with them. Here's some pictures.

Art with Room 7

On Friday Mrs Larsen took us to see our art class Room 7. We helped them make hand pirates. First we got our buddies and an art shirt. Next we painted their hand red on the bottom of their palm, skin colour in the middle of their palm and back on the top of their palm and fingers. We we finished we read a story with them. They are going to add eyes and detail when they are dry. I cant wait to see how they turn out.

Snowball Fight

On Thursday Room 15 had a snowball fight. We each got a bit of paper and wrote 3 things about ourselves that no one would know about us. After we finished writing on the paper we screwed it up into a shape of a ball. When Mrs Larsen said go we had a snow ball fight. At the end of the fight we read out what it said on the snowball. We tried to figure out who it belonged to. It was lots of fun.

Camp - Friday

Written by Keylen When I woke from my deep sleep I got up, got my gear ready and pack it into the bus. We were off again. Today was our last day on camp. As I was getting onto the bus I thought to myself "Mmmmmmm! Today at the prawn farm I'm hopefully going to catch a prawn at the prawn fishing area." When we arrived at the prawn farm a tour guy showed us around. He showed us where they put the different prawn pools. Some of the prawns were 3 quarters the size of my arm. Next prawn fishing. Yay! I said to myself as we were going to get our gear for prawn fishing. I caught quite a lot of prawn at the prawn farm a few years ago, I was hoping to do the same again this year. We had to use a bamboo stick, good tight string and a hook. We also got a cup of prawn food. We were starting to throw our hooks out I looked over and saw Cole had already put his in and Bam, he had caught a prawn that was about half of the size my arm. About two minutes later I got a bite and Ka Pow! I pulled and pulled but rod but it flung out of the water. The prawn took my food and got away, I was so disappointed. After about 25 minutes of fishing it was time to put our gear away and head to Turangi. At Turangi we went to the Trout Centre. The trout centre had thousands of trout in their pools and ponds. There was a guy that told us how different breeds of trout, what they eat, and how many they breed. It was amazing how many trout they have. We got to feed the trout and where ever you put the food they all come rushing to you. After that we started to head back to Wanganui. On the way we stopped off at Raukawa Falls to have lunch. Raukawa Falls was way different to Huka Falls because Huka falls is much bigger. We started to head home after that. The ride back was so fun because me and Cole were just talking and making up jokes. What a great camp!

Camp - Thursday

Written by (Isaiah)

Woohoo! Today was the most exciting day of all, we were going to the new camp in Taupo but first came all of the most painstakingly boring cleaning jobs ever. After a long and painful experience, it was time to pack up and leave.
First up on the list was Redwood Forest. Once we arrived we were blown away by how ginormous the trees were. It took 10 people to wrap right around the whole trunk of the tree. Afterwards we went on a scavenger hunt and had an explore around.
Next on the list was the Lava Glass Studio. The vases were amazing. We even got to go in and watch the artist make the ornaments and glasses. The artist was awesome at making vases especially when it comes to adding details. He was making them in less than ten minutes!
Finally it was lunch time so we stopped off at Huka Falls. The first thing I did was shove the delicious bread roll into my mouth. It was so juicy and delicious. Afterwards we had a quick look at the falls and hit the road again.
Next was the Honey Hive. We arrived and had quick lesson about bees and how they work. Then we headed off to explore the place. The first thing that came to my eyes was the film that was playing. So I sat down and watched it.
Oh yeah next on the list was the Volcanic Activity Centre. This was the most interesting place because we were watching a screen which showed where earthquakes were happening and it showed the scale of them too. After that I headed to the earthquake simulator. It shook us so badly that I fell of my seat. Finally it was film time so we went into another room and watched a film about the earthquake in Christchurch and the Mt Ruapehu blowing its top.
Last but not least we went to our new camp. It turned out to be quite a cool camp. By then it was dinner time so we headed and had a beautiful BBQ for dinner. But desert topped everything we had a giant ball of candy floss bigger than our heads! Afterwards we played board games then went to bed.

Camp - Wednesday

Written by Tarron

Yawn! At 7am in the morning we all climbed out of bed and slowly dressed and packed our day packs and headed off to breakfast.  For breakfast we had a choice of crunchy toast, cornflakes, flaky Weet-bix and Rices with a milo. My group had to do our duty. It was mopping and sweeping up the floors after breakfast. Once we finally finished our duty we made lunch for the day it looked yum.
When we were all ready we hopped on the bus and left to go to smelly Kuirau Geothermal Park. Kuirau Park had a lot of mud pools and boiling hot water, it was smelly. After we looked at the mud pools and boiling water we went over a bridge, it took us across very hot steaming water. It was awesome.
Everyone was really excited because when we left Kuirau Park we arrived at the gondola/luge. I think it was the highlight of my camp. First we went up the gondola and had morning tea. What a sight it was looking over Rotorua. After morning tea we all got our helmets and headed to the luge. First we all did the really slow beginners track. Nick my group leader and I were the first to cross the line. After the beginners track I went on the advanced track, it was so fast. I felt like a Cheetah. There was one part where I crashed, it was on a sand barrier because I did a jump and forgot I had to slow down.
After the Luge the class went back down the gondola and left for Paradise Valley Springs Lion Park. When we arrived at the Lion park we had lunch and went in and had a look in the shop. As soon as we walked in we saw a fluffy soft giant stuffed Kiwi. The first thing my group did was look at the young lion cubs. We even got to pat the lion cubs, it was awesome as. After the cubs we went and met the donkey, we named it John key the donkey. We carried on walking until we came to the trout feeding area and fed the trout. After that we looked at all the other animals. After that we all had an ice block each. Finally it was time to see the lion feeding, there was a really greedy lion king called Max. He kept on eating all the other lion’s meat. It was funny.
YAY! It was time to have a swim we all got out of the bus and rushed to the changing rooms. When we got changed we all ran to the pool and dived in. It was funny because Wiremu did a funky bomb into the pool and we all laughed.
After the swim we all got dressed and jumped back in the bus and left to the camp grounds. When we all arrived at the camp grounds we had a fun as game of tackle bullrush. It was funny because the smallest person in our class, Kahu played it. Kahu got passed around 10 people and we all cheered for him, it was amazing. After bullrush we had dinner watched another movie, the Muppets then went to bed. My cabin didn't go to sleep straight away because we kept on talking, it was funny. What a great day!

Camp - Tuesday

Written by Kahu

My eyes burst open on Tuesday, I leapt out of bed and splashed sub-zero cold water onto my face and packed all of my stuff, double checking that I had everything and I went straight to school. I packed my stuff into the bus and we left for camp.
The bus trip seemed never-ending until finally we arrived in Raetihi for morning tea. We had a play on the playground and then left for Taupo. When we got there we had lunch at a playground. After a good stretch and run-around we headed on another long trip to Rotorua.
In Rotorua the first thing we did was the duck tour. That took us around Rotorua, it was REALLY smelly. We went into Blue Lake, it was also called lake Tiki Tapu because a maori woman lost a sacred tribal necklace in it. The driver told us about each place we saw.
After the duck tour we headed for Keswick Camp. When we arrived we unpacked the bus and set up our gear. Once we set up we could go and play. After we had a play we went into the dining hall for dinner. After a delicious dinner of roast beef and veges we brushed our teeth, got into our pyjamas and headed over to a room with our sleeping bags and watched a movie, School of Rock. It was LOL funny. After the movie we all went to bed and got a good night’s sleep.

Shape Monsters

In class we have been learning all about Geometry. We focused on shapes. To show what we have learnt we created a shape monster. We created a 3D shape from a net then added 2D shapes for eyes legs etc. here are some of them.

Athletics

Yesterday was the Senior School Team's Athletics day. We had high jump, long jump, vortex, shot put, long distance and sprints. Everyone had a go at every activity. It was great to see everyone having fun and trying hard. I wonder who has made it to interschool athletics.

Assembly Item

Last week we had an Assembly Item, Two Pigs, a Wolf and a Mud Pie! All of the boys had a part and dressed up. They worked extremely hard and presented a fantastic play. Well done boys.

Our New Habit

Today we started our new, Finding Humour. We talked about how its good to have a laugh but we need to know when its appropriate and when its not. To help us find humour we researched some jokes. Here are a few the boys came up with.

Casey's

Teacher: Billy stop making ugly faces at other students!
Billy: But why ma’am!
Teacher: Because when I was a child, my parents told me that if I kept making ugly faces my face would stay like that!
Billy: Well, I can see you didn’t listen then!

Jake's
What do you call cheese that’s not yours?
Nacho cheese!

TePaerangi
What do you get when you cross a sheep and a kangaroo?
A woolly jumper

Blogging King

Congratulations Isaiah. You always ensure your blog is updated and looks great. Keep up the great blogging.

Swimming

Last week we started swimming. It was heaps of fun.

Risky Characters

The Habit of Mind we have been focusing on is Taking Responsible Risk. This week we discussed books which have risky characters. Everyone then chose their favourite book at identified the risky character. Here is Jakes one.

For our habits of mind we have been doing responsible risks. So for our habits of mind we got a picture of someone who takes responsible or irresponsible risks from a book because without a risk taker it wouldn't be a fun or interesting book. For my character I did Trap from the book Geronimo Stilton. I think that he is an irresponsible risk taker because he always does jokes on Geronimo that could be very frightening or could even injure him very badly. Trap does jokes like putting a whole bottle of chilly sauce in Geronimo's burger.

Trap, a very bad joker.

Badminton

Yesterday we walked down to the Springvale Stadium for Badminton lessons. We are going every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks. Yesterday we reminded ourselves of some of the basic, how to hold a racket and that we only need to tap the shuttle. At the end we got to put up the nets and have a game. It was lots of fun.

Bike Safety

On Monday and Tuesday Constable Val came in and talked to the class about bike safety. On the first day we discussed how our bikes and helmets need to meet the legal requirements for them to be safe. On the second day we completed an obstacle. We learnt how to indicate and turn corners correctly and what to do at a stop sign. Constable Val is coming back next week to do more with us. I wonder what it will be.

Our New HOM

Today we started focusing on our new HOM, Taking Responsible Risks. We talked about what that means to us. What risk have you always wanted to take?

Geometry

This term for maths we are learning about Geometry. We started off by going over what 2D shapes we know and learning a few more we weren't aware of like a trapezium and a parallelogram. The boys used there knowledge to create a shape picture.
