Financial Literacy

Today Ewen from ASB came and talked to us. He told us about how we can earn and save money. We learnt about interest, eftpos and credit.
Here are some things we learnt...

  • you can earn money from the bank (interest)
  • it's important to save money and treat yourself a little too
  • there are many different ways to earn money - chores, jobs, neighbourhood jobs
  • its better to use an eftpos rather than credit
  • using a credit card means you are borrowing money
  • don't spend all of your money

Weekly Challenge

Well I thought it was time to start up our weekly challenge again. Each week I will place a question online. To tell me your answer place a comment on that post. You need to be very specific with your answers. The more information you supply the higher the chance you have of winning. The first person who gets the answer right (with all the information) wins. Anyone from any class can answer the question. So what are you waiting for?

Here goes...
How old is the oldest athlete at the 2012 Olympics? Who are they? What country are they representing? What sport are the competing in?

Buddy Art

Today we went to Room 12 to help them with their art. We sponged a piece of paper with 2 colours ready for them to print some bugs on top. The seniors boys were a great help.

Finger Painting

Today for art we made some prints, finger print pictures. We looked at some ideas and examples then Mrs Larsen let us go and create our own. It was great fun. Here are a few things people created.

Here are a few things the boys learnt when creating a print with their fingers.
Tarron - I learnt that is was pretty challenging because I had to make it look like an actual circle
Wiremu - I learnt that print making is when you dab your fingers up and down instead of rubbing
VJ - I learnt how to make a person using my fingers and nails.
Isaiah - I learnt how to make little people using just your finger prints
Keylen - I learnt how to make it darker on one side and lighter on the other to make it 3D
Te Paerangi - I learnt to use a little bit of paint because if you use to much it wont look like a finger print it will look like a blob.

Inquiry

Today we started our investigation for our Inquiry. We were trying to answer our first question, What do the Olympic Rings represent. Here is what we found out...

  • The Olympic Rings were designed by a man called Baron Pierre De Coubertin in 1912 after he saw a similar artifact in Ancient Greece.
  • The five rings represent the five continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
  • Every country in the world has at least one of the five colours of the rings in their flag.

Tech Expo

On Friday Room 6 and 15 went to the Memorial Hall to the Tech Expo. Firstly we listened to a couple of speakers. They talked about Mathletics and showed us a really cool robot that speaks Japanese. After that we had a look around all the stalls. We loved getting up close with the robots, chatting with the doctor in Christchurch, watching WIS demonstrate their robotics, watching St Georges showing us how they make 3D models form drawings and playing with all the programmes on Awa City Clubhouse computers. We had lots of fun.

Our Habit of Mind

Today we did another activity to help us learn more about the habit we are focusing on, Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision. We worked in pairs. One person had to create a pattern using objects hidden behind a barrier. They then had to give clear instructions to their partner so they could create the same pattern. Then they swapped roles. Everyone had so much fun!

Going to the Warehouse

Last night I went to the Warehouse to buy my uncle a birthday present, Cody and I also bought one pair of shoes. They are my best shoes. I have never had those shoes before. I had even put black laces in them so they look better. My dad helped me put them in, that was before my homework it was about space. I just had to do my tittle page then it was done. Mum said "WOW" I had to add my name in it to. I asked mum if I could put a background but she said no, so I asked mum if I was allowed to put space stickers on... and we did.
