When we did our Wombat google challenge a while ago, we learnt that on the 22nd of October in Australia they celebrate Wombat Day. So we thought we would join them. Some boys in our class investigated it some more and discovered you celebrate wombat day by having a cake in the shape of a wombat. Also by eating lots of chocolate and wine gums. So Mrs Larsen made us a yummy cake, we played the chocolate game and another game with smarties. We also ate lots of wine gums. What a great day!
Today we went out with Room 1, our buddy class, to practice some athletics activities. The students had a go at high jump, long distance, sprints and vortex throw. I was able to get some great action shots.
The triangles maths group have been working really hard to learn how to rename improper fractions as mixed fractions. They each created a sketchcast to show what they have learnt.
Today Room 12 came to visit our class. So we thought we would let them have another go at creating a simple weave. this time they had to do it all on their own. The Room 14 boys weren't allowed to touch it. They found that very difficult, but everyone worked really hard and the weaves look great.
Today was our first of 4 badminton sessions. We went back over the basic to see if we remembered everything we were taught last year. It was so much fun and we have some great players in our class.
Today we went to Room 12 to start off this terms art sessions. For art this term we are learning to weave. We went to Room 12 to teach them how to create a basic weave.
Unfortunately no one was able to answer last weeks challenge question. The answer was sand and water. The wet sand is hard (you do not sink into it) compared to dry sand. But when the water comes rushing around your feet, you sink. Therefore, it acts like a solid and a liquid. Pretty cool stuff!
Today I showed the class how to do a simple weave. They all thought it was going to be a piece of cake but they soon changed their minds. Its not as easy as it looks. Check out what they learnt.
To make a plain weave you go over, under, over, under (Matt) You need to keep your paper stright (David) There should be no gaps. You need to push each strip up closely to the last strip you just weaved (Dakota) You need to glue the ends to keep it in place (Campbell) It looks like a Chess Board (Jahzia)
Hopefully they remember these key points when we teach Room 12 how to weave on Wednesday.
Last week on Friday Room 14 made pizza's and smoothies. We got a pizza base and we had to put the ingredients on that. After that we made our smoothies. We grabbed a banana, strawberries and milk. We put it in the magic bullet. You had to put your hand on the lid so the magic bullet can mix it. They tasted delicious!
Today the Year 6's went to W.I.S. I did cooking. We made savoury scones. I put bacon, cheese and red onion in mine. They were good. I had one for morning tea. By Dakota`
This morning at school we had a garage/bake sale and sausage sizzle to raise money for our school camp. I cooked some sausages for the sausage sizzle. They were really yummy. Lots of other people came and helped too. It was a great morning. We have raised a lot of money. I've had a lot of fun helping. By Jahzia
Our day started off with use rearranging the little bits and pieces of furniture in our class ready for us to get our other furniture back (we hoped). Next Room 1 came to our class for buddy time. The students were split into groups. 2 people from each group had 3 minutes to get as much stuff as they could grab from Room 1, that would be good to build the tallest safest tower. After a very quick 3 minutes the building started, some were successful, some not so lucky! Congratulations to the winning team.
After morning tea, we all wrote our weekly reflections. Check out the students blogs to see how their weeks have been.
Ms O'Connor then gave us a visit. YAY! we get our furniture back.
To celebrate and finish off our inquiry topic we made healthy pizza's and smoothies. They looked so good. Mrs Steedman said that we should go into the pizza making business. Most people loved their pizza's but not all of the reactions were good.
Lastly we finished our day off with being introduced to our new inquiry, CO2 cars. Check out the you tube clip I showed the class. Looks like fun.
Today the Monkey's reading group finished working on their blabberize. They were told to choose an animal, write questions about what they wanted to know, skim and scan information on the internet to find relevant information to answer their questions. Next they had to find an image of their animal, record themselves on the microphone and use these to create their blabberize. How do you think they went?
Today we continued working on constructing our castles. We made a huge mess and it looked like we had a snow storm inside our class. Thanks to the few boys who worked hard vacuuming up all the little bits. Everyone is working really hard and we have some great castles underway. A couple of people learnt it's not a good idea to touch the end of a hot glue gun... you get burnt! We now have a few scars.
Last term we didn't get a chance to finish our art topic so we are doing it now. Our topic was design and we were looking at castles. Today Mrs Larsen brought in a castle she made and 3 huge bags full of polystyrene. After looking closely at how Mrs Larsen made her castle, we spent a lot of time thinking how we were going to create our own. Once we had an idea we were off collecting polystyrene, cutting it up and some people started to glue. Our class was a mess it looked like we had been hit by a snow storm. Lucky we have a good vacuum cleaner at school.
Unfortunately we are not one of the 5 finalists for the Best Class Blog. Even though I think our blog is pretty fantastic! Click on the picture below to check out what we were up against and vote for your favourite.
Each week I will post a challenge onto our blog. The first person to leave a comment with the correct answer wins the prize. Anyone can answer the challenge (not just our class), so be in quick.
This weeks challenge links to the science experiment the Yr 5's did.
This morning all the Year 5's from Room 6 came to Room 14 to do a gooey science experiment. First we put newspaper down on the floor. Then we got a board and put it on the paper. Next we got a bowl and put two cups of cornflour in the bowl. After that we got a cup of water and mixed it in. Mrs McAvoy came around with green food colouring. We mixed it all up. We created....well we really don't know what we created. It was like a liquid, it moved around and dripped out of our hands. But when we punched it, it was solid. How strange! All we do know is that is was a lot of fun and very messy.
Here is the recipe if you want to make some at home.
2 cups of cornflour 1 cup of water A few drops of food colouring
Put all the ingredients into a bowl. Mix it together slowly and then you are done. When you have finished experimenting wash your hands etc in a bucket of warm soapy water and then tip the water on the grass. The gooey mixture will block your drain. Any mess of tables can just be wiped up. If you spill some on the floor, it's okay wait for it to dry, and it vacuums right up. Amazing stuff!
Try some of the things we did... Touch it Squeeze it How does it feel? Put your fingers slowly into it, what happens? Now punch it hard, what happens?
Last term we focused on Persisting which is a habit of mind. The students wrote down all the things they thought persisting meant and we created a wordle. They then made a poster. They also each thought of a time when they used the habit persisting and wrote a story about it. Here is the display I made with all of their work. This Term we are focusing on managing impulsivity. A habit we all need. Watch this space to see what we get up to.
Mothball has been very busy exploring New Zealand. He went up to Mt Maunganui for a holiday. He also went to Taupo, Ohope, and Te Puke. While he was there he met Mrs Larsen's aunty. After his holiday up north Mothball went to Wellington with Mrs Lasren to explore the capital and go see the Wearable Arts Show. Unfortunately the weather wasn't to good for sight seeing. But he did get to see the show. It was amazing. Check out all the place he explored.
