Active Learning

This week we have really enjoyed doing our Reading and Maths Active Learning tasks. Our Reading ones have been based on our inquiry learning on the water cycle which include making a waka, growing our own rainbow, cloud watching and making a rain gauge. Our Maths ones are on Geometry, position and orientation which include creating a hidden treasure map, making our own compass, giving instructions to a friend on how to make a picture and making a sign post. Some of the tasks we do on our own and some we do in pairs. We look forward to being creative during our Active Learning times.

Fitness

We are so happy to be back at school as so are our teachers.

This week for fitness we have been working really hard. The teachers have created a song based on the 12 days of Christmas but instead it's the 5 days fo school.

Every morning we have gone out and been busy doing burpees, side kicks, punches and many more moves.

The teachers even sing the song to us while we are working hard. Some of us can keep up, some of us are sill working on that!

Check it out.

Learning @ Home

During our 4 week lockdown, lots of boys have been busy completing different tasks, even during the "holidays".

Here are some of the things some boys have done.

Nate - Reading in the dark

Seth - Creating a kowhaiwhai pattern

Lincon - Upcycling, creating a kangaroo.

I will put some more work up next week. I wonder what some boys will get up to next.

Golf

In term 1 the year 3 to 6 students started having golf lessons provided by Wanganui Golf Club free of charge. We will have 3 lessons in total. Peter Cassidy a PGA Professional is carrying out the sessions. The students will develop their hand eye coordination while striving for accuracy during the skills they are learning.

After the first lesson the boys were already doing so well.

Harold

This week we were lucky enough to visit the Harold bus. We learnt all about what it takes to be a leader, how to be part of a team and how do we know how other people are feeling.

We enjoyed taking part in all the fun activities and of course seeing harold and listening to his great jokes!

Thanks Mark and Harold.

Art

For art we have been learning about Cubism.

The word "cubism" sounds like it might be about cubes or blocks (kind of like Minecraft), but it is actually a style of art that was started by Picasso and his friend Georges Braque in France in 1907.

Cubism is a style of art which aims to show more than one viewpoint of a person or object at the same time.

It is called Cubism because the items represented in the artworks look like they are made out of cubes and other geometrical shapes.

We decided to create our own cubism self portraits. First we folded our paper to make the different shapes. Next we drew the features of our face on based on Picasso style. We went over our features and over the lines with sharpie. Lastly we coloured each shape in with bright colours. They look amazing!

Hide and Seek

Last week for our writing hook we played hide and seek. We watched a Youtube clip and talked about what makes a good hiding spot.

Next we went over the rules and then we had a few games. We discovered some of us are really good at hiding and some of us need some more practice.

Taranaki Camp

What an amazing camp we had in New Plymouth last week. We did a variety of activities with many of them being the first time for lots of us. Rifle shooting, archery, freebie golf, rock climbing, ten pin bowling, glow in the dark mini golf, visiting museums, inline skating, visiting zoos, Chaddy Charters boat ride, kayaking, Mega Bounce and swimming at the pools. It was fun sleeping in cabins with our friends and classmates too.

School Athletics

Sunny skies and not much wind made great conditions to compete in our events for athletics. All students persisted with each activity and it was great to see so many achieving further than during our practice sessions. There was lots of akiaki - encouragement from each other which is great to hear. Here are a few photos from the day.
