Dangerous Decibels

A few weeks ago Tracey from the Hearing Association came to school to talk to our class about dangerous decibels. She told us we should either turn it down, walk away or wear ear plugs or ear muffs. We learnt all about the hair cells inside our ear and that once we have damaged them we can't fix them. At the end of the lesson we all got to have a god with some tuning forks, We loved going around hitting everything and listening/seeing them vibrate. Tracy gave everyone in our class some ear plugs so we can protect our ears.We had a great time with Tracy.

Skeleton Names

This term our art focus is collage. We discussed how a collage is a piece of art made by using different materials glued onto a backing.

So we made a skeleton name collage. We cut out our names and different bones shapes from white paper and glued them onto black paper to create a skeleton.

They look great!

May Day Expo

Today was MAY Day so went went to the May Expo and we learnt all about MAY Day. MAY Day stands for Disabilities May Affect You Day. At the expo Chris Ross spoke to us. He has an arm missing and is a paralympian. He talked to us about cycling and the things he needed to do to go to the 2012 London Paralympics. He said that no matter how much people tease you, you should never give up.

Banyan Trees

For art this term we have been using pastels. We learnt how to blend pastels using transitional colours. We created Baynan trees. Banyan trees start off as a little tree and trunk. As they grow the branches grow back down into the ground to form more trunks. The can grow very very big and people often think its not just one tree.

We used paint and bright coloured pastels to create our banyan trees.

Managing Impulsivity

Last week we discussed the Habit of Mind Managing Impulsivity some more. We made a brainstormed what we though it meant to us...
  • Think before you do something
  • Wait
  • Stop and Think
  • Thinking about your actions
  • Considering the consequences
  • Thinking, Are you being safe?
  • Thinking about others and their feeling
  • Think about the options
  • Using manners
  • Being a role model
  • Controlling your behaviour
  • Try your best
  • Be sensible
We listened to a book on you tube. We talked about how David definitely did not manage his impulsivity!

I have found another one about David. What do you think?

Chrome Book Evening

On Monday night we had a meeting for parents so they could learn more about chrome books. We had a great turn out. We had people from Noel Leeming come to show the parents what a chrome book is. Mrs Larsen showed the parents the kinds of things we do on them. Hopefully lots of parents can buy one for their kids to use at school and home!

Snowball Fight!

Today we started off our the new year with another great snowball fight. We loved it! Everyone wrote 3 facts about themselves on a piece of paper. We screwed them up and had a snowball fight. After a while we made sure we had a snowball each. One at a time we read out the 3 facts on the paper and had to guess which classmate we thought it was. It's such a great way to each to know each!

Welcome Back!

Akira's Visit

Last week the Nelson Giants basketball player Akira Marsters came to school to talk to Room 14 and 15 about how education is important and to never give up. He said to us that education is important, it's not all about muscles it's also about brains and that's why it's important to have a good education. He also said no matter what people say like "you won't make it" and "you can't become a great basketball player" you never give up, just keep practising and you could become great at what you do. The other thing he told us was not to be cocky because people won't like you and you also do worse when you're cocky. At morning tea we played shoot-a-hoop with Akira, it was 10 cents a shot to help fund raise so he can to USA to play basketball in 2014. At lunch we played a team match against Akira for fun. The other thing for fund raising was a sausage sizzle and a drink for $2.00.

Milk Tasting

To get everyone excited about our new inquiry we decided to taste lost of different types of milk. We tried standard, lite, full cream, soy and coconut milk. We all thought coconut milk was disgusting!
